Sam A. Baker State Park Canoe Rentals & Fishing

Canoeing & Kayaking

Available at the park store, visitors can rent canoes, solo sit-on-top kayaks, and six-person rafts for use on the scenic St. Francois River. Big Creek is only floatable by kayak during high water. Floats on the St. Francois River are typically available from April through November, weather and water level permitting. Floats ranging from 4 miles to 18 miles are available, averaging 2 - 12 hours.

The cabins, dining lodge, store and canoe rental are operated by a concession host. For more information about the concession facilities, please call 573-856-4224.

Swimming

Swimming is available at several access points located throughout the park, on both the St. Francois River and Big Creek. Day usage is from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Fishing

Fishing on either the St. Francois River or Big Creek is available to anglers at many different locations throughout Sam A. Baker State Park. Fisherman can try their luck at smallmouth bass, goggle-eye, blue gill, sunfish, and catfish. Day usage is from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

A concrete boat ramp is located on the St. Francois River in Campground #1. It is always open, except during periods of heavy rain and flooding. There are no launch fees or motor restrictions, however, the size of the river limits usage to smaller boats and canoes.
